During the Fall 2013 semester, RCHI organized and hosted its inaugural lecture series to address the theme of “Successful Struggles: Planning for Resilient Urban Housing. The lecture series brought practitioners and scholars from around the world to MIT to discuss the challenges involved in providing housing for disadvantaged groups. MIT faculty members Adele Santos, Eran Ben-Joseph, Phil Thompson, Jim Wescoat, and Larry Vale opened the series with a panel discussion addressing the question of what constitutes resilient urban housing. Subsequent sessions featured guest presentations on urban development in Mozambique, the homeless in India, favelas in Brazil, integrated housing in Ethiopia, and inclusive housing in the U.S. In addition, the RCHI team presented case studies of projects in Singapore, New Orleans, and Johannesburg, and a framework for analyzing resilience.”
